Devil's Apron
Devil's Apron
with a nod to ramie, the amazing nettle-cloth, this painting is a culmination of historical plant useage, and lore....When researching Nettle lore, the folk name I couldn’t shake off was ‘Devil’s Apron’. It instantly conjured up curious images, and the further into the weeds I got, the more I had to share these ideas visually. Despite all the benefits nettles offer, people called it ‘Devil’s Apron’ believing that Satan collected this plant, fashioning himself a protective smock, also alluding to ‘Naught Man’s plaything’, suggesting the devil spins nettles to make his clothes. A folktale claims that the sting’s origin occurs when the devil was tossed out of heaven, his first footsteps on earth resulted in the growth of this fabulous weed!.
