The Magic of May; taken by faeries

Part 1-inspiration and research.

I think I was taken by the faeries today……my entire life is a scene from a folk-horror flick these days…..

What started as a swift, pre-work run soon escalated into a three hour wander of whimsy. Captivated by the blankets of bluebells, I stumbled through a labyrinth of winding woodlands until I lost my bearings. I concocted faery potions beneath hazy hazel and frolicked in a frenzy, all the time collecting footage of my strange travels. Eventually I checked the time and felt sun scrambled at the disconcerting numbers as they mocked my weary brain. It didn’t make any sense. Was I simply having so much fun I lost track…..or was I dragged beneath the earth to the land of the fae for a feast and a shindig?

Bluebells are named ‘the fairie flower’ by some, said to chime at midnight to call fairies to their revels, but humans should beware – the flowers are so magically enchanted that adults who wander in a bluebell woods will be pixy-led, meaning that the fairies will cause them to lose their way and meander around until they are rescued…..

Anyway, upon my return I edited together some of my videos and very much in the vein of ‘A Field In England’, tried to convey my morning misadventure. I altered the pitch of some Jethro Tull samples and whacked them over a fabulous Dark faery ethereal goth track 🖤𝐀𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 - 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐀 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞 🖤 which I think achieved a suitable meld of wyrd, dissonant, ominous and cheeky.

I’m calling it ‘art research’ and soon I shall share the work inspired by these teeny blue muses and the party they kindly invited me to…..

Part 2- Making Art and products

Here is a process video and a waffle about the mythology of one of my botanical faves…..the witches thimble, bloody fingers, cuckoo boots-it is of course the fairy flower, the bluebell……and they don’t hang about. May is their month and the magic is transient, so go look for fairies whilst you still can, just be careful they don’t take you away.
